The Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) is reporting that cod numbers are not recovering in the Irish Sea. The BBC carries the story below. From our experience, there is often a difference in opinion between fishermen’s view on fish stocks and government research. From talking to fishermen this can be due to a number of factors, such as the locations that research vessels travel in and the areas the test in. Statements from fishermen from North America and the UK and Ireland attest to this. There is no question that fish stock management is vital to ensuring the livelihoods of fishermen, but also ensuring that we maintain the sea life eco systems. Commercial fishing and fish stock management are not mutually exclusive, they are very much interdependent.
It’s been a tough decade for fishermen, with declining fleets around the world and tough quota systems. We would be interested to get the thoughts of fishermen out there. You can leave feedback on our Facebook page.
