One of the the things that we consider when designing jackets is whether to use snaps or zippers. Traditionally rain gear or oil skins have always used snaps because they are cheap and easily replaced, however, they have drawbacks such as their durability (rust) and can cause discomfort when working and leaning over railings or the side of boats. Zippers on the other hand are more expensive, but a modern quality zipper will often outlast snaps. When using a zipper, the key is to having a large plastic one that will not rust and can be used when wearing gloves.
At Stormline we have used zippers for many years now, as we have found that they make for a better product, which although more expensive are longer lasting and ultimately less fiddly.
