Wet weather gear might not be at the top of your shopping list. But when the season gets tough and you need to be at your best, then it helps to be prepared.
So if you’re new to farming, or looking to update your gear this winter, here are a few basic items that’ll help get the job done.
Waterproof jacket
You probably saw this one coming.
A lightweight, no fuss waterproof jacket serves two purposes: to keep you dry and make sure you’re still flexible enough to carry out the task at hand. Too bulky and you’ll be weighed down. Or, if it’s not made from the right materials, you’ll end up soaked. And trust us, you don’t want that.
Waterproof jackets are ideal for agricultural workers. If your line of work demands early starts, then you might want to think about hi-visibility materials. They’re designed to protect your safety — plus, you won’t have any trouble fumbling around in your wardrobe trying to find your jacket at 4am.
Wet weather vest
There’s going to be days when you need a wet weather jacket. Other times, when you just need an extra layer to protect your body from the elements, then a wet weather vest will be ideal.
Made from oilskin — which is easy to keep clean — these vests have a fleece in-lining, doubled-up with a waterproof PVC outer layer to keep you dry.
It’s a must-have basic item for any farmer.
Bib and brace pants
This type of foul weather gear will withstand the elements. Allowing your skin to breath in the temperate months, they’ll also offer protection and durability during the harsher winter season.
Keep an eye out for bib and brace pants that are also reversible. This is a great feature and ensures you get as much use as possible from your pants. It’s not bad for your pocket either.
T-shirts
Okay, so you don’t need a special farmer t-shirt. But the key thing to keep in mind is layering.
100% cotton t-shirts will help keep you warm, without sacrificing breathability and comfort. It’s always a good idea to layer these items — especially since New Zealand’s weather is unpredictable, even at the best of times. What’s better they’re easy to wash and dry quickly, so you’ll always be prepared.
