The right wet weather gear for New Zealand fishing

It never hurts to be prepared for wet weather season when it comes to New Zealand fishing.

We’ve written before about which waterproof materials work best for the marine industry. But what happens if you’re new to fishing general? Or have just settled into a new life in New Zealand?

Well, we’ll let you in on a secret.

It doesn’t really matter whether you’re a novice or a seasoned pro of commercial fishing. Wet weather gear matters. So this is what you need to look out for.

Foul weather fishing jackets

It’s arguably your most important piece of armor in commercial fishing.

A foul weather jacket will help keep you warm, dry and – most importantly – visible and safe during a job out at sea. If you’re new to New Zealand fishing, or in the market for something more practical, here are a few things to look out for:

  • Adjustable sleeves
  • A longer back for extra water protection
  • Hi-visibility material
  • A waterproof material, like PVC

Want something to survive even the toughest conditions?

You might prefer a heavy duty foul weather jacket. These garments come reinforced with extra strength PVC and are guaranteed to withstand the most challenging of circumstances.

Heavy duty brace pants

Next in line are heavy duty brace pants.

We say they’re ideal for commercial fishing, but you could also use them for anything from agriculture work to aquaculture.

Regardless of your profession, however, heavy duty brace pants are perfect for wet weather conditions and come fully equipped to keep you flexible and dry.

Our pair have even featured on Deadliest Catch.

Oilskin fishing pants

Fishing oilskins have been used for over a century in New Zealand commercial fishing.

Designed to repel everything the sea throws at you, these oilskin fishing pants are an essential component in your wet weather gear. They’re comfortable (thanks to heavy-duty PVC) and have additional removable padding on the knees, so you won’t need to worry about them falling short on the job.

Even better, you can choose between a grey/neon design and the classic blue/neon combo.

Here’s some other design features to look out for:

  • Find fishing oilskins that come with an elasticated waist, so they’ll fit regardless of what you’re wearing underneath
  • Hi-visibility material
  • Reinforcement at the joints
