Our 5-minute guide to wet weather gear in 2017

Another year has flown by. And whilst you’ve probably heard enough ‘new year, new me’ mantras recently, there’s one more thing to add to your list. Well, at least there should be.

This is the perfect time to update your wet weather gear – not just because the sales are on – but it stands you in good position for the rest of the year. No one wants to be caught short. And that’s especially true when it comes working on a commercial fishing boat.

Anyway, we like to keep things quick and simple. With that in mind, here is some wet weather gear we definitely feel safer with going into 2017.

Fishing pants

Wet weather gear

It’s the staple of any commercial job. You can find hundreds of varieties of fishing pants on the market, but there are a few must-have features that set apart the industry-standard from something really built to last:

  • Made from heavy-duty PVC
(Why’s that important? The pants dry quicker and repel oil.)
  • Removable knee pads
(Why’s that important? There’s a lot of wear and tear in the knees. Padding makes your pants longer-lasting, and makes sure they’re nice and comfy.)
  • Hi-visibility colour
(Why’s that important? Safety. The mantra ‘Be Seen, Be Safe’ is doubly true when commercial fishing. Or, you know, find them in your cupboard at 4am before setting out for work.)
  • Elasticated braces
(Why’s that important? It doesn’t matter how many layers you’ve got on. Those pants will still fit.)
  • Elastic waist
(Why’s that important? Again, it’s important your pants are adjustable depending on what you’re wearing underneath. It also helps to keep you waterproof.)

Already have the perfect pair? Check our blog about protecting your waterproofs and making sure they last as long as possible.

Fishing jackets

Find a good fishing jacket and you’ll be set for years to come. But if you’re still on the hunt, we recommend keeping an eye out for a jacket that comes with:

  • Double-layer PVC material
(Why’s that important? Your jacket will be put through the ringer, so it needs to stay strong and waterproof. Double-layer PVC does just the job.)
  • Longer back, shorter front
(Why’s that important? It needs to stay lightweight, but offer as much protection against the elements as possible. A longer back, with a shorter front, lets you stay flexible but keep you dry.)
  • Neoprene cuffs
(Why’s that important? They make sure no water seeps into your sleeves and can be adjusted whenever you need it.)

Wet weather gear in 2017

We said we wanted to keep things quick and simple. Now, we know we’ve not covered everything here. There are still sleeves, bibs, and all those other essential wet weather gear items. But this should be a good starting point for the rest of 2017.

We’ll have more hints and tips as the weeks go on.
