Why wearing the right clothing matters – from the milking parlour to the pastures
If you work in dairy farming, you’ll know just how important it is to have the right gear. You need clothing and equipment that can withstand use day in, day out. If it doesn’t perform, it ends up in the bin – which is a waste of your money as well as being bad for the environment.
This is why it’s so crucial to get high quality parlour workwear and wet gear from a specialist. This means tried-and-tested kit that is made to last – whatever the weather, life on the farm or even your livestock can throw at it.
Here at Stormline, we stock farming workwear that has been designed using input from real-life farmers and agriculture workers. We asked them what they needed for everyday wear, and used their feedback to design a range of clothing and accessories that is guaranteed to be fit for purpose.
Some of the main priorities for dairy farm workwear include the following:
Protection from the elements
Farming often involves working outside, sometimes in treacherous conditions. While the UK has a much more temperate climate than other parts of the world, UK farmers can still face high winds, driving rain and freezing conditions.
It’s an all-season job, so your workwear needs to be ready for anything. One of the most crucial pieces of kit is a fully waterproof outer layer, because you won’t last long in the job if you’re getting soaked through five times a day.
Breathability in hot conditions
There are also indoor conditions to think about. Milking in particular can be stifling hot work, especially in summer. It isn’t wise to go into the milking parlour without some protective and waterproof gear, but you need it to be lightweight so that you can work comfortably.
Versatility and multi-functionality
When you’ve a busy day ahead, you don’t want to waste time struggling in and out of clothing. So if you’ve spent the morning in the milking parlour and are planning an afternoon with the herd outdoors, you need versatile kit suitable for both environments. The key word is multi-functionality – you need workwear that can do it all.
However, there are occasions when you need to get changed, especially after a particularly messy and trying day with indoor livestock. In this case, it’s imperative to have clothing you can slip on and off when you need to. This means easily accessible zips and fastenings, along with all-in-one overalls you can slip on over other clothes.
What type of farming workwear do I need?
If you’re kitting out a whole team or just shopping for your own workwear needs, you’ve come to the right place. Here at Stormline, we’re experts in purpose-designed agriculture workwear and wet weather gear.
Take a look below at some of our recommendations.
Heavy duty PVC Apron
A good quality heavy-duty PVC apron should be kept readily to hand in any milking parlour.
Our Industrial & Commercial Double Sided Heavy Duty PVC Apron is made from 500gsm double-sided PVC, which is easy to clean. It’s very practical, with a one-piece design that goes over the neck and ties at the body. The PVC ties are threaded through durable stainless steel eyelets.
It’s comfortable and lightweight enough to wear for hours at a time. And handily, it can also be trimmed to size if needed, so you can adjust it to suit every member of the team. An alternative is the 999ST apron with elastic which can go over any clothing and is designed for comfort and durability with 650gsm oil resistant PVC.
Farming bib and brace overalls
While some items may only be worn some of the time, you might spend most of your day in a pair of overalls.
Our Stormtex-Air 664G Waterproof Farming Bib Overalls are tough enough to withstand everything from mucking out to milking, as well as working outdoors. They’re also lightweight enough that they give you full freedom of movement, as well as having adjustable straps so you can get a comfortable fit.
Other features include:
• 320gsm stretch PVC with oil resistant PU coating
• Reinforced double layer PVC on thigh and knees
• Internal chest pocket
• Elasticated waist, low back design and adjustable straps for comfort
• Double welded seams for maximum durability.
Waterproof trousers
Another farming workwear essential is a solid pair of waterproof overtrousers. Our Stormtex-Air 755G Waterproof Farming Overtrousers are tailor-made for agriculture and wet work. They’re easy to slip on thanks to an elastic waist, while the drawcord ensures that they stay put.
These trousers are made from oil resistant 340gsm PVC, with double welded seams for maximum durability and waterproofing.
Hi-vis gear
You might also need hi-vis workwear, especially if you work in a large or busy industrial farming workplace. If this is the case, take a look at our Stormtex 2480 Midweight PVC Commercial Rain Gear Jacket.
Other essentials you might need include gloves and/or milking sleeves. If you have a preferred pair of these, opt for farming overalls to give you the right protection while keeping your arms free. Then you can simply don your gloves or milking sleeves when you need to.
Some farmers prefer to keep their arms completely free. Unfortunately, water (and milk) does find a way to get up your sleeves whatever you wear, leading to a very chilly and uncomfortable situation especially in winter. So it could be best to simply wear gloves, and protect the rest of your body with short-sleeved workwear. However, every farmer is different, so it’s completely up to you.
And of course, don’t forget to keep your extremities warm. Farming is one of those jobs which must be done whatever the weather. No matter if it’s freezing outside, pelting with rain or howling with wind, you need to get on with those essential daily tasks.
So make sure you keep yourself warm and well insulated with the right thermals – a hat, gloves, thick socks, lined farming vest and plenty of other insulating underlayers.
Must-have features of heavy-duty agriculture workwear
Here’s what to look for when shopping for farming workwear:
• Durability – reinforced/welded seams and high quality PVC material
• Flexibility – elasticated cuffs and adjustable straps
• Lightweight and breathable – clothing that offers freedom of movement, especially around the arms
• Built-in knee protection
• Waterproofing.
